Cultural Entrepreneur Programme
CEP was a programme of professional development, funded by Arts Council England, developed by the sector, for the sector. The programme aimed to develop the skills and experience of a small group of cultural entrepreneurs living or working in the Yorkshire & Humber region. A bespoke programme of activity during 2013, provided opportunities for participants to develop their business expertise with support from experts, mentors and trainers. The programme included 1:1 and group learning, field trips, coaching support, work shadowing and practical workshops and events.
The five mentors for the Cultural Entrepreneur Programme were Karen Watson (East Street Arts, Leeds), Thom Hetherington (Buy Art Fair, Manchester Contemporary), Leila Jancovich (Leeds Metropolitan University), Keith Arrowsmith (JMW Solicitors) and Karen Sherwood (Cupola Gallery, Sheffield).
The mentors were an important resource for the programme, and were selected in direct response to the requirements of the cohort.
YVAN also held free public events to help creative and cultural entrepreneurs in their marketing, communications and market reach.
Getting the Message – focused on marketing, social media communications and branding.
The day included presentations by digital communications expert Katie Moffat, leading visual arts PR professional Catharine Braithwaite and Andrew Palmer & Helen Palmer (Palmer Squared) who shared their extensive knowledge on cultural branding. The session was held in one of East Street Arts ‘Empty Spaces’ in the centre of Leeds.
Business of the Arts – focussed on business planning and development, including how to sell work online, on site and through events and third parties.
Leading creative industries consultant and author of T-shirts and Suits David Parrish will share his extensive knowledge of working with small to medium sized creative enterprises with practical steps in how to understand your business and develop its potential. Laurence Lane and Paulette Brien from Manchester-based The International 3 shared their expertise in helping artists to sell their work, fresh from leading the YVAN and Arts Council England supported Market Share programme. The event took place at Showroom Cinema and Workstation Creative Business Centre in Sheffield.
