Museum & Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief(MGETR)- Pilot Study
YVAN is currently delivering the second phase of this action research programme, supporting the arts and museum sector in the North to take advantage of the UK Government’s Museum and Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief (MGETR).
The Tax Relief scheme represents significant potential investment in the sector. It allows eligible companies to claim back 19% of their spending on in-house or touring exhibitions. Recent successful claims by organisations in the North range from £15k to £65k.
MGETR pilot Project Manager Isabelle Tracy said: “We are very keen to work with small artist-led organisations, to demonstrate to them the potential of claiming this tax relief, as well as the larger organisations, which are providing us with persuasive Case Studies to advocate to government for the continuation of the scheme”.
“The opportunity to reclaim spending on curatorial activity has had low take-up so far, despite the fact that successful claims can fund existing posts, develop new positions and encourage new approaches to curation, or the commissioning of new work. We aim to remove some of the barriers preventing organisations from claiming, and delivered a Workshop programme in 2019 to organisations which went on to make successful claims.”
We are currently planning 3 Workshops in May, in Newcastle, Manchester and Wakefield, but are making contingency plans to hold the Workshops remotely, if the current Covid-19 conditions continue.”
